Cycling Gyeongju Between the Daereungwon Tombs and Bulguksa
Rent a bicycle near the Gyeongju terminal and ride a flat loop through the Daereungwon tombs, past Cheomseongdae, and all the way to the Bulguksa Temple grounds.
The Problem: Gyeongju’s Silla Relics Are Too Spread Out to Walk and Too Close for a Taxi
You have one day to see the tombs, the observatory, the palace pond, and the temple on the hill. Walking wastes two hours between sites. A taxi chain costs more than the entry fees and drops you at the wrong end of each complex. The fix is a flat 17.5 km bicycle loop that links Daereungwon Tomb Complex, Cheomseongdae, Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, and the temple on Mount Toham. The route takes eight hours including stops. Pick up a bike at Gyeongju Bike Rental near Gyeongju Station, ride the 1.2 km to Daereungwon, and finish at the temple's parking lot. The whole thing is on paved lanes except one stretch where the lane vanishes.
Where to Rent and What to Pay
Go to Gyeongju Bike Rental (58 1 Wonhyo ro) and arrive at 08:00 when it opens. A standard city bike costs 10,000 KRW for the day. An electric bike is 20,000 KRW. A tandem is 25,000 KRW. You hand over your passport or ID card as deposit. No cash deposit is required. They give you a cable lock with every bike. You must return the bike by 19:00.
The Exact Route: from the Rental Shop to the Tombs
Start at Daereungwon Tumuli Park
Ride 1.2 km south from the rental shop to Daereungwon Tumuli Park. The road is flat and has painted bike lanes. Park at the public racks on the north side along Taejong ro. The adult admission for 2024 was 3,000 KRW. The Gyeongju City Tour Pass costs 15,000 KRW and covers Daereungwon, Anapji, the temple, and four more sites. Buy the pass at the Daereungwon ticket office if you plan to enter at least three of the included sites. It is valid for 48 hours from first use.
Cheomseongdae and Donggung Palace
From Daereungwon it is 0.8 km to Cheomseongdae. The ride takes three minutes. Cheomseongdae is free because you can only view it from the outside. There is no interior access. Lock your bike at the racks on Gyerim ro.
From Cheomseongdae it is 1.0 km to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond. The ride is flat. Lock the bike at the racks next to the ticket office. The pond stays open until 22:00 with last entry at 21:30. Admission for an adult in 2024 was 3,000 KRW. The lights come on at sunset and stay on until 22:00. If you reach Anapji before sunset, leave and come back after dark. The illuminated reflection is the reason to go.
The Hard Part: Anapji to the Temple
The Climb to Mount Toham
The distance from Anapji to the temple is 14.5 km. The cumulative one way distance from the rental shop is 17.5 km. The first 6.5 km out of the city are flat with bike lanes. Then the road tilts. You gain about 200 metres of elevation over the final 8 km. The last 1.5 km before the temple gate climbs at a 6, 8% gradient. On a standard city bike you will stand on the pedals for that stretch. On an electric bike you can leave it in low assist and barely notice the hill. The bike lane disappears about 2 km before the temple, where the road narrows. Ride on the shoulder and watch for tour buses. Park the bike at the racks in the temple parking lot, 200 metres from the ticket gate. The racks are unattended. The 2024 adult admission was 6,000 KRW.
Do Not Attempt Seokguram Grotto by Bicycle
Do not continue to Seokguram Grotto by bicycle. The 4.2 km road from the temple to Seokguram is uphill and not bikeable. A shuttle bus runs between the two. The 2024 adult admission for Seokguram was an additional 6,000 KRW.
What Goes Wrong Most Often
The single thing that most often goes wrong here is the return timing. You ride to the temple, tour it, and then face a 17.5 km ride back on a gradual uphill. The bike must be back by 19:00. If you leave the temple at 17:30 you will arrive at the rental shop around 18:45, just in time. If you linger at Anapji until the lights come on and then ride to the temple, you will not make the return. Instead, visit Anapji in the morning or afternoon, lock your bike at the rental shop by 18:45, walk the 0.5 km to Anapji for the night lights, and walk back to your accommodation. Pick up the bike the next morning if the pass is still valid.
Who This Route Suits and Who Should Skip it
This route suits anyone comfortable riding 35 km on paved roads with one sustained climb. It suits solo travellers and pairs who want to move at their own pace without waiting for a shuttle. It suits anyone who buys the 15,000 KRW city pass and uses it at least three times.
Skip the bike if you are not fit enough to climb a 6% gradient for 1.5 km or if you plan to see Seokguram Grotto in the same day. Skip it if it is 1 am and the rental shop is closed. In that case walk to Anapji, which stays open until 22:00, and take a taxi back. Skip it if you have children under eight who cannot reach the pedals on a standard city bike; the rental shop does not list child seats or smaller bikes in its inventory.
Common Questions
Can I rent a bike near the Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal?
The nearest rental shop is Gyeongju Bike Rental near Gyeongju Station, about a 15 minute walk from the bus terminal. The address is 58 1 Wonhyo ro.
Is the 15,000 KRW city pass worth it?
Yes. If you enter Daereungwon (3,000 KRW), Anapji (3,000 KRW), and the temple (6,000 KRW), that total alone nearly covers the pass. The pass also covers Seokguram and four other sites, so it pays for itself once you add a fourth entry.
Where exactly does the bike lane end?
About 2 km before the temple. After that you share the road with cars and buses on a narrow shoulder.
Can I ride an electric bike up to the temple?
Yes. The 20,000 KRW electric bike handles the 200 metre elevation gain and the steep final climb without difficulty.
What do I do with my passport?
The rental shop holds your passport or ID card as a deposit. You get it back when you return the bike by 19:00. Do not lose it.
Are the bike racks at the temple safe?
The racks are in the parking lot, 200 metres from the ticket gate, and unattended. Use the cable lock the rental shop provides. Lock the frame, not just the wheel.
Can I see Seokguram Grotto on this bike route?
No. Seokguram is 4.2 km uphill from the temple and not bikeable. Take the shuttle bus from the parking lot. The 2024 adult admission was an additional 6,000 KRW.
